The Cottages at Spring House Farm, USA

Arthur and Zee Campbell, the Directors of our Ecolodge Member in Northern Carolina, were successful in preventing the clear-cutting of forest in the vicinity of the Farm and ECOCLUB warmly congratulates them.

Mr Arthur Campbell sent us this message:
"We need only to open our eyes to see that the climate is being affected by de-forestation. Here in Western North Carolina, we are in the worst drought in more one hundred years. Being a retired airline pilot, I witnessed the subtle changes by having to deal with weather on a daily basis for over 25 years. There is no doubt in my mind that by removing shade and moisture that trees provides is causing these dramatic but again subtle changes. No matter if it's in the Amazon basin or here in Western North Carolina, the end result is still the same. Unless we do something soon we will continue to burn ourselves up. I was able to stop the proposed clear cut by negotiation. Basically it came down to money. While our neighbours were against the clear cut, when it came time to "put up or shut up" I was left being the one to step up with the cash to avert the action. While it hurt like hell to do it in a personal and business sense, I feel great relief in that we have saved one of the most beautiful and ecologically diverse "coves" in the area. I thought of this again as I came home this morning from taking my son to school and spotted 16 wild turkeys feeding in our hay field.Sixteen Happy Turkeys
Before we moved to this property, built the cottages and created the wildlife sanctuary in 1998, this property was completely devoid of wild life. By doing what had to be done here with the clear cut, my hope here is that our neighbours and see the seriousness and importance of saving and preserving land and it's natural flora and fauna.

The Guesthouse director spoke on Greece's "Sky 100.3" Radio on Monday 30/9/2002:

Mr. George Paraskevopoulos described how the 27 inhabitants of Agios Achilleios Island in Lake Mikri Prespa, used part of a temporary wooden bridge created to link the island to the mainland during the recent Prespeia festival, to create a type of floating "hospital" for birds (some 260 species) of the lake and called for the state and Ngos to help them create a permanent installation on the island.
