THE JANUARY ECO-QUIZ IS:
" We sometimes refer to the meeting point of a river and the sea as a "Delta", why is that and what is the origin of the word Delta?"

The explanation is that all deltas are more or less triangular in shape, in particular the Nile Delta was clearly triangular in shape, so ancient mariners saw a resemblance with the fourth letter of the greek alphabet "Delta". Ultimately the word delta comes from the phoenician word Daleth which means Door, so the explanation makes a full circle, as a delta can be considered as the door to the sea or to the river.
