A Cretan Dam(n). Or how a 60s dream became a 21st century nightmare: The Aposelemis Dam in Crete.

Half a century ago, in the 60s, some visionaries on our island thought that the impending water-shortage disaster for the rapidly expanding city of Irakleio could only be avoided with the construction of a great dam. Their obvious choice was the river Honos, which since time immemorial flooded the plateau of Lasithi, and the optimum location was at Aposelemis. However, for various reasons the project did not materialise then.
